Prescription of hypnotic psychotropic drugs in the Paris metropolitan area: a temporal analysis (2015–2021) and a territorial, demographic, and socioeconomic analysis (2017–2019) of chronic sleep disorders
Introduction - This study aims to describe, at the municipal level, the dispensing of hypnotic psychotropic drugs in pharmacies within the Paris metropolitan area to characterize the prevalence of chronic sleep disorders such as insomnia, annually (2015–2021), monthly, and geographically (2017–2019), and to identify potentially associated demographic and socioeconomic determinants (2017–2019). Methods - The annual (2015–2021) and monthly (2017–2019) rates of patients who received hypnotic psychotropic medications (prescription ≥3 months), defined as any strictly hypnotic substance capable of inducing and/or maintaining sleep or any psychotropic drug commonly used as a sedative at night, were estimated by sex, age group, and according to the quintile of the social disadvantage index of the municipality of residence, at the municipal level, within the Paris urban area (approximately 10.8 million inhabitants). These estimates were derived from data in the National Health Data System (SNDS), based on a list of 381 pharmaceutical products reimbursed by the French national health insurance system. Results - The dispensing of hypnotic psychotropic drugs affected 515,867 residents (6.4% of the population) on average per year between 2015 and 2021. It decreased from 2016 to 2021 (men: -16.7%; women: -19.5%), and was lowest in the summer and highest in the fall (+10.4% compared to the summer). It was more common among women (odds ratio = 1.64; 95% confidence interval: [1.63–1.65]; p
