Paris-Jussieu University Campus, France: a cluster of five cases of pleural mesothelioma.
Introduction - Five cases of pleural mesothelioma among staff at the Jussieu campus in Paris were reported to the InVS, which sought to assess the likelihood that these mesotheliomas were caused by passive occupational exposure to asbestos in the workplace. Methods - A lifetime estimate of asbestos exposure for the cases was derived from interviews with the individuals themselves or, in the case of deceased individuals, with their relatives, using standardized questionnaires reviewed by an occupational hygienist. Results - Among the five individuals, born between 1934 and 1942, no active occupational, domestic, or environmental exposure could be identified, except for the rare use of protective products by some. These individuals worked on the campus for between ten and thirty-five years as faculty members in the fields of volcanology, physics, paleontology, or mathematics. They were present during the construction of the campus and frequented areas containing asbestos-sprayed surfaces. The pleural mesotheliomas were diagnosed in 2001 or 2002. Four had developed pleural plaques. Conclusion—To our knowledge, this is the first report describing multiple cases of pleural mesothelioma among staff at a university campus with asbestos-sprayed surfaces who had not been actively exposed to asbestos. These findings highlight the significant health impact of passive asbestos exposure in the workplace. (R.A)
