Feasibility Study for the Northern General Cancer Registry. Study Report 2004–2008
As part of the government’s 2003–2007 cancer plan, a feasibility study for a cancer registry in the Nord region was conducted by the Nord Interregional Epidemiology Unit beginning in 2004. The pilot registry covers the health district of the Lille metropolitan area (800,000 residents). A network of data sources has been established: anatomic and cytopathology laboratories (ACP), medical information departments, health insurance agencies, and radiation therapy centers. Private ACP practices declined to participate. Preliminary analysis indicates that case registration tends to be comprehensive. Software to automate data import and management will be operational in 2009. Two research projects have begun. The number of staff required is estimated at between 8.6 and 10.8 FTE. Funding from the Institute for Public Health Surveillance, the National Cancer Institute, the League Against Cancer, the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Affairs, the Regional Hospitalization Agency, and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Regional Council will cover approximately 10 FTE starting in 2009. The General Cancer Registry of Lille and its region was accredited in November 2008 by the National Registry Committee for a period of three years. It is managed by the "Regional Cancer Reference Center" Health Cooperation Group, which brings together the Lille University Hospital (CHRU) and the Cancer Control Center. This registry will provide epidemiological information to public health professionals to guide and monitor health measures. Research in the fields of environmental and occupational health and the socioeconomic determinants of cancer care will be developed. (R.A.)
