Health Monitoring of Migrant Populations in Calais and Grande Synthe. Epidemiological Update, April 8, 2016.

Key points

  • The MSF clinic left the Calais camp on March 1, 2016. The J. Ferry branch of the PASS is now the sole provider of primary care at the camp. Because the data provided by the Calais PASS (J. Ferry branch, Calais Hospital branch) and the Calais Hospital Emergency Department is incomplete, the data cannot be interpreted. We are no longer able to present health data regarding migrants residing in the Calais camp in this epidemiological report.

  • Migrants residing in the "Basroch" camp moved during weeks 9 and 10 to a new camp set up in Grande-Synthe, the "La Linère" camp. The Red Cross (RC) also provides consultations at this camp on weekends (1.5 days); the data have been added to the Epidemiological Report starting in week 11.

  • The proportion of consultations for acute lower respiratory tract infections continued to decline this week at the Grande-Synthe site (3%, n=8), while the proportion of influenza-like illnesses increased slightly but remained low (3%, n=7). In Nord-Pas-de-Calais, all indicators of activity for influenza-like illnesses at the hospital and outpatient levels (SOS Médecins) continue the decline that began in week 12; the peak has been passed, but activity remains at a high level. This calls for vigilance. It should be noted that during the measles vaccination campaign conducted in February 2016 at the Grande-Synthe camp, 433 people were also vaccinated against the flu.

  • After an increase observed in weeks 10, 11, and 12, the proportion of care-seeking for trauma decreased in week 13 to 6% (n=14) (Fig. 6). Among the 8 cases for which information was available, 4 (50%) were accidental injuries unrelated to border crossings, 3 (38%) were accidental injuries related to border crossings, and 1 (12%) involved violence during clashes unrelated to law enforcement.

  • As part of the national carbon monoxide poisoning surveillance system, the ARS was notified on April 5, 2016, of a carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning incident at the “La Linière” migrant camp in Grande-Synthe, linked to a defective kerosene heater. Five people were involved.
