COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Hauts-de-France Region as of June 18, 2020

Summary

What is currently known about the situation in the region?

In recent weeks, as the various phases of reopening have unfolded, the epidemic has remained under control in the region, with a reproduction number that remains below 1 at the regional level, meaning that, on average, an infected person currently infects fewer than one other person. This metric is important to monitor in any epidemic because it provides insight into the level of control over the transmission of a contagious infectious agent.

However, we must not assume that the virus has disappeared. It continues to circulate in the population, as evidenced by the new cases that continue to emerge. Its transmission potential has simply decreased because the majority of us continue to follow preventive measures and practices. But we must not rely solely on the responsible behavior of the majority. We must continue to contain transmission because this virus remains just as virulent, as evidenced by the clusters that continue to emerge in workplaces, families, and social circles.

In some countries—Iran, Turkey, and more recently China—we have seen resurgences of varying magnitude since the resumption of socioeconomic activities and the easing of control measures, forcing authorities to strictly reinforce restrictions.

What are the public health implications for the region?

After six weeks of easing lockdown restrictions, all regional indicators (in urban areas as well as in healthcare and social care facilities) confirm that the epidemic in Hauts-de-France has stabilized and is currently under control.

Nevertheless, we must remain vigilant and continue to respect and apply individual and collective protection recommendations, especially since the summer season is often associated with a period of relaxation that will also lead to significant population movements and mixing.

Santé publique France remains committed to serving the public, working alongside the Regional Health Agencies (ARS) and local stakeholders (healthcare professionals, healthcare facilities, the National Health Insurance, government agencies, local authorities, and associations) to provide the relevant regional authorities and the Ministry of Health with the information needed to manage and control the epidemic.

After months of intense mobilization, let us remain cautious to ensure resilience for everyone.
