Tuberculosis in French Guiana. 2023 Report.

Key Points

Tuberculosis

  • The number of reported cases is rising in 2023 but has remained generally stable at around 70 per year since 2018.

  • The crude incidence rate remains the highest in France at 24.2 reported cases per 100,000 inhabitants, but remains lower than in most of French Guiana’s neighboring countries.

  • The sociodemographic characteristics of cases remained generally stable between 2018 and 2023: reported cases predominantly involved men, people aged 25 to 59, and people born abroad.

  • The majority (80%) of cases reported in 2023 were pulmonary, and 87% were diagnosed following spontaneous presentation for care.

  • Two cases of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis were reported in 2023, whereas no cases had been recorded since 2018 by the National Mycobacterial Reference Center.

Treatment Outcomes

  • Information on treatment outcomes increased in 2022 but remains insufficient and has been below 40% since 2017, even though it is essential for evaluating the performance of the tuberculosis care system.

Latent Tuberculosis Infections (LTIs)

  • The number of LTBI cases reported is decreasing in 2023 (n=4) and involves only children aged 0 to 14 years.
