Malaria in French Guiana. 2025 Report.
Key Points
The number of malaria cases declined in 2025 to 181 after two years of increases, representing a 57% decrease compared to 2024 (425 cases) and an incidence rate of 0.6 per 1,000 inhabitants (compared to 1.5 per 1,000 in 2024).
The monthly number of cases ranged from 7 to 27, compared to 10 to 126 in 2024.
P. vivax remained the predominant species (92%); P. falciparum accounted for 7% of cases, P. malariae for 1%, and P. ovale for 0.6%.
Almost all 12 P. falciparum infections were imported, with the exception of 2 autochthonous cases.
The proportion of relapses was decreasing, reaching 16% compared to 38% in 2024, though no clear trend could be identified over the past eight years.
Active transmission foci were still present near the Littoral region and away from the historical transmission areas of the Interior and Upper Maroni, although their extent had decreased in 2025 compared to the previous two years.
No transmission foci were identified in the municipalities of Roura and Montsinéry-Tonnegrande.
There were no significant changes in disease severity, and no deaths were recorded among hospitalized malaria cases.
