Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of May 15, 2025.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Over the past two weeks (W18 and W19), overall dengue activity in the territory was low, with an average of 13 confirmed cases per week. The majority of cases were reported in the Savanes sector, where a slight increase has been observed. The serotype identified over the past two weeks (W15 and W16) was exclusively DENV-2.

  • Since the beginning of the year, 175 cases of dengue have been confirmed in French Guiana, averaging 10 cases per week. Of the 110 samples serotyped, 97% were DENV-2 and 3% were DENV-3.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria episodes diagnosed in the healthcare system during the first two weeks of May remained low, with 6 episodes (3 episodes each in S18 and S19, vs. 10 in total in S16 and S17). Of these 6 cases, one was P. falciparum imported from Africa, three were P. vivax, and two were P. vivax relapses.

  • In total, 67 malaria cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity declined between January and March (from 27 monthly cases to 4) and rose slightly in April with 16 cases recorded. Since the beginning of the year, infections have mainly occurred in the gold mining area in the municipality of Kourou.

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • The seasonal flu epidemic was declared in S52-2024 and peaked in February. Since then, indicators have been declining, but the region remains in an epidemic phase. Over the past two weeks, activity has been declining and at a low level along the coast, while remaining at a relatively high level in local health centers and hospitals.

Diarrhea

  • Activity has been declining in remote communities (CDPS and local hospitals) and along the coast over the past two weeks (data from the Cayenne and Western Guyana hospitals) and has risen slightly in private practice.
