Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Update as of September 26, 2024.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue circulation remained at a sub-epidemic level in weeks 37–38. The level of circulation is low and stable throughout French Guiana. In the Cayenne Island sector, the level of circulation rose slightly to a low level in weeks 37–38 (compared to weeks 35–36).

  • Although the dengue epidemic has ended, vigilance regarding arboviruses must be maintained. Seeking biological confirmation for any dengue-like syndrome remains essential.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remains low, with a total of 4 cases recorded, including 3 in S37 and 1 in S38. Among these, 1 case was imported P. falciparum and 3 were P. vivax, including 1 relapse.

  • Since early July, new infections in the region have occurred primarily in gold-panning areas in the municipality of Kourou and in rural/dust-road areas in the municipalities of Kourou and Roura. In total, 358 malaria cases have been diagnosed since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity is declining: 15 cases were recorded in July, 12 in August, and 5 in September.

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • An increase in the circulation of ARIs has been observed in emergency room visits at coastal hospitals, while a decrease in ARI consultations has been recorded in private practice. RSV circulation among infants has been rising sharply since Week 38. The seasonal bronchiolitis epidemic has been declared and is described on page 2. The summary of the 2023–2024 bronchiolitis epidemic is also presented on page 3.

Diarrhea

  • Activity has dropped to a moderate level, with a marked decrease in outpatient visits and a slight increase in hospital admissions along the coast and in inland areas (CDPS and local hospitals).
