Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Update as of October 24, 2024.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue circulation remains at a sub-epidemic level in weeks 41–42. The level of circulation is low and decreasing compared to the previous two weeks (weeks 39–40).

  • Although the dengue epidemic has ended, vigilance regarding arboviruses must be maintained. Seeking biological confirmation for any dengue-like syndrome remains essential.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remains low, with a total of 10 cases recorded, including 6 in S41 and 4 in S42. Among these, 1 case was imported P. falciparum and 9 were P. vivax, including 5 relapses.

  • Since early August, new infections in the region have occurred primarily in urban and peri-urban areas in St. Georges and in gold-mining areas in the municipality of Kourou. A total of 376 malaria cases have been diagnosed since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity rose slightly in October: 15 cases were recorded in July, 12 in August, 10 in September, and 13 in October (through S42).

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • The RSV bronchiolitis epidemic among children under two years of age continues in French Guiana. This epidemic may partly explain the increase in the circulation of acute respiratory infections observed in community practice.

Diarrhea

  • Activity is moderate and stable in remote areas of French Guiana (CDPS and local hospitals). The situation is showing a slight decrease in community practice and in coastal hospitals.
