Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Update as of October 10, 2024.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue circulation remains at a sub-epidemic level in weeks 39–40. The level of circulation is low and stable throughout French Guiana. In the Western Coastal region, the level of circulation has risen slightly to a low level in weeks 39–40 (compared to weeks 37–38).

  • Although the dengue epidemic has ended, vigilance regarding arboviruses must be maintained. Seeking biological confirmation for any dengue-like syndrome remains essential.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remains low, with a total of 8 cases recorded, including 5 in S39 and 3 in S40. Among these, 1 case was imported P. falciparum and 7 were P. vivax, including 1 relapse.

  • Since early July, new infections in the region have occurred primarily in gold-mining areas in the municipality of Kourou and in urban/suburban areas in the municipality of St. Georges. A total of 366 malaria cases have been diagnosed since the beginning of the year.

  • Malaria activity is declining: 15 cases were recorded in July, 12 in August, 10 in September, and 3 in October (S40).

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • The RSV bronchiolitis epidemic among children under two years of age continues in French Guiana. This epidemic may partly explain the increase in the circulation of ARIs observed in community practice.

Diarrhea

  • Activity has been increasing over the past two weeks in the remote areas of the Maroni region (CDPS and local hospitals). The situation in community practice is declining, while it remains stable in coastal hospitals.
