Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Update as of November 7, 2024.
Key Points
Dengue
The dengue epidemic has been over in the territory since the end of August. On the island of Cayenne, an increase in the number of outpatient visits for dengue-like syndrome was observed in weeks 43–44, with a downward trend in week 44. Due to the reduced coverage of the sentinel physician network during the holiday period, these trends will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Although the dengue epidemic has ended, vigilance regarding arboviral diseases must be maintained. Biological confirmation testing remains essential for any dengue-like syndrome.
Malaria
The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remains low, with a total of 11 P. vivax cases recorded, including 8 in S43 and 3 in S44. Of these 11 cases, 2 were relapses.
Since early September, new infections in the region have occurred primarily in the urban-suburban area of St. Georges and in the gold-mining area of the municipality of Kourou. A total of 387 malaria cases have been diagnosed since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity is on the rise in October: 15 cases were recorded in July, 12 in August, 10 in September, and 24 in October.
Acute Respiratory Infections
The RSV bronchiolitis epidemic among children under two years of age continues in French Guiana. However, the incidence of acute respiratory infections is generally decreasing in private practice and in the emergency departments of coastal hospitals.
Diarrhea
Activity is moderate and appears stable in remote areas of French Guiana (CDPS and local hospitals). However, this trend should be interpreted with caution due to the drought and the difficulty of traveling by canoe for residents of isolated villages wishing to reach the CDPS. The situation is showing a slight decrease in primary care settings and in coastal hospitals.
