Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Bulletin of July 10, 2025.
Key Points
Dengue
Over the past two weeks (W26 and W27), overall dengue activity in the territory was low, with an average of 4 confirmed cases per week. These cases were reported in the three sectors of the Littoral and the Interior-East. The serotype identified over the past two weeks was exclusively DENV-2.
Since the beginning of the year, 232 cases of dengue have been confirmed in French Guiana, averaging 9 cases per week. Of these, 125 were from the Savanes sector, 46 from the Western Coastal sector, 26 from Cayenne Island, 9 from the Maroni sector, and 1 from the Eastern Interior sector; the location was undetermined for 19 additional cases, and 6 were residents outside French Guiana. Among the 164 serotyped samples, 98% were DENV-2 and 2% were DENV-3.
Malaria
The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remained low despite a slight increase, with 7 cases (3 in S26 and 4 in S27, vs. 3 in total in S24 and S25). Of these 7 cases, 2 were P. falciparum imported from the African continent and Brazil, and 5 were P. vivax (no relapses).
In total, 94 malaria cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity declined between January and June (from 27 to 11 cases per month). Since the beginning of the year, infections have occurred primarily in gold mining areas.
Acute respiratory infections
A resurgence of the flu epidemic has been observed since late May. The trend is generally stable, but the level of viral circulation remains high: the epidemic continues.
Bronchiolitis activity increased in May, reaching epidemic levels by the end of the month. The recent trend is downward, but the level of viral circulation—particularly for RSV—remains high.
Diarrhea
Activity was generally moderate and declining in isolated communities (CDPS and local hospitals) and along the coast over the past two weeks.
