Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Bulletin of December 5, 2024.
Key Points
Dengue
The dengue epidemic has been over in the territory since the end of August. The number of consultations for dengue-like syndrome is increasing in S47 and S48 in the Ile de Cayenne, Littoral Ouest, and Savanes sectors. This increase will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Although the dengue epidemic has ended, vigilance regarding arboviral diseases must be maintained. Biological confirmation testing remains essential for any dengue-like syndrome.
Malaria
The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remained low and stable, with a total of 10 cases, including 1 case of P. falciparum (imported). Among the 9 cases of P. vivax, 3 were relapses. The increase in cases observed in St. Georges in Week 46 did not continue: 3 P. vivax cases were diagnosed by the CDPS in Weeks 47 and 48, respectively (vs. 8 in Week 46).
Since early September, new infections in the region have occurred primarily in urban and peri-urban areas in St. Georges and in gold mining areas in the municipality of Kourou. In total, 412 malaria cases have been diagnosed since the beginning of the year (vs. 340 in all of 2023). Malaria activity remained stable in November with 25 cases reported (compared to 24 in October) and well below the number of cases reported in November 2023 (93 cases).
Acute Respiratory Infections
The RSV bronchiolitis epidemic among children under two years of age continues in French Guiana. At the same time, the circulation of acute respiratory infections is on the rise in community practice. Data on emergency department visits have not been available since Week 46 due to a data transmission issue at the CHC.
Diarrhea
Activity is moderate and increasing in isolated communities (CDPS and local hospitals), primarily in the Oyapock region. Along the coast, the situation is improving in primary care.
