Epidemiological Situation of Dengue in French Guiana. Update as of October 16, 2020.
Key Points
Most of French Guiana has been in an epidemic situation for several months, including the Maroni, West Coast, Kourou, and Cayenne Island sectors. The Oyapock region is experiencing localized outbreaks. The Committee on Infectious and Emerging Diseases has approved a proposal to move the rest of the territory—the Interior and East Coast regions—into the epidemic phase (Phase 4 of the Psage).
The number of new dengue cases in French Guiana has been declining for several weeks. The peak of the epidemic therefore appears to have been reached at the regional level. However, trends in viral circulation show regional disparities:
returning to normal in the Maroni sector
returning to normal in the Western Coast sector
declining in the Kourou sector
declining in the Cayenne Island sector
declining in the Oyapock sector
continuing to rise in the Interior and East Coast sectors, with the majority of cases detected in Cacao
Emergency room visits for dengue are showing a slow decline. Hospitalizations for dengue appear relatively stable since May. The circulating serotypes are primarily DEN-1 and DEN-2. The importation of DEN-3 cases—a serotype circulating in the current epidemic in the Caribbean—could pose a risk of reigniting the epidemic in French Guiana. After several imported cases were detected in August and September, the first locally acquired case of DEN-3 was identified in week 41.
