Epidemiological Situation of Dengue in French Guiana. Update as of May 6, 2021.
Key Points
Summary of the epidemiological situation in French Guiana
The epidemic, which had been on a downward trend at the regional level since peaking in June–July 2020, saw a resurgence in early 2021, reflecting the situation on the island of Cayenne. However, a downward trend has been emerging since early April.
Taking into account the decrease in viral circulation in the following areas, the Committee on Infectious and Emerging Diseases has proposed the following phase changes:
Kourou sector, in epidemic phase since S2020-12: proposal to transition to the end-of-epidemic phase in S2021-14,
Interior and Eastern Coast sector, in epidemic phase since S2020-37: proposed transition to the end-of-epidemic phase in S2021-06.
The Cayenne Island sector remains in the epidemic phase but has shown a downward trend in recent weeks. In the rest of the territory, the situation is stable at a low level of viral circulation, limited to sporadic case detections.
Emergency room visits for dengue are slightly down at CHC and stable at a very low level at CHK and CHOG. Hospitalizations showed a small resurgence at CHC in early 2021.
The circulating serotypes are predominantly DEN-1, followed by DEN-2 and, sporadically, DEN-3, with the majority of cases imported from Martinique.
