COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana, May 6, 2021
Key Points
The regional trend remains stable, with a weekly incidence rate of 236 cases per 100,000 residents. No signs of a decline are currently observed, and both incidence and hospital indicators remain at relatively high levels. In this context, high vigilance must be maintained because, despite the stable trend observed, a resurgence of the epidemic is possible. Furthermore, as observed during the two previous waves, a decline in new hospitalizations is not expected until the peak in confirmed cases has been significantly surpassed.
As of May 4, the effective reproduction number (R_eff) for confirmed cases was estimated at 1.02 [0.94–1.09], down from last week, reflecting the stable trend observed across all regions of French Guiana, including the West.
Hospitalizations and ICU admissions are also stable and remain at a level equivalent to that of the peak of the second wave.
Two new deaths were also reported last week, bringing the total number of deaths since March 2020 to 104. Only 3.6% of the population in French Guiana is vaccinated: this level of coverage is too low to protect the territory.
In this context, it is important to maintain a high level of vigilance by adhering to preventive measures and social distancing guidelines in all settings—both private and professional—to limit transmission and protect both yourself and others.
