Hunger During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Cayenne (French Guiana) and the Surrounding Area

Introduction - In French Guiana, the French Red Cross (CRF), Médecins du Monde (MdM), and the Health Care Access Unit (PASS) of the Cayenne Hospital Center, which were active in disadvantaged neighborhoods during the COVID-19 health crisis, observed an increase in concerns regarding access to food. They therefore decided to conduct a survey with the primary objective of quantifying food insecurity (FI) among their beneficiaries. Materials and Methods - Face-to-face questionnaires were administered to adults seeking care from the mobile health teams of the CRf and MdM, located in Cayenne and neighboring municipalities, as well as at the PASS. The questionnaire measured food insecurity at the household level using three tools: the food consumption score, the simplified coping strategies index, and the household food deprivation index. Results - A total of 221 households agreed to participate in this survey. The survey revealed that nearly two in five households had experienced food insufficiency in the past seven days and that more than 80% of households had gone hungry in the past month. Faced with food shortages, 36% of households had resorted to severe coping strategies likely to have long-term negative consequences. The majority of households had seen their food budget decline during the health crisis, and nearly half of them had 30 euros or less per week to feed the entire household. Conclusion - The survey conducted among recipients of medical and social services in disadvantaged neighborhoods of Cayenne and its surroundings revealed the alarming food insecurity faced by the households surveyed. Further studies are needed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis on food and nutritional insecurity among households in French Guiana.
