The enhanced health monitoring system implemented for the World Transplant Games. Nancy, July 2003
The arrival in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle) in July 2003 of approximately 1,000 transplant recipients from 55 countries for the 14th World Transplant Games prompted health authorities to implement enhanced health surveillance. The goal of this surveillance was to detect any epidemic early and, if necessary, adjust management measures. The four emergency departments in the metropolitan area, the 911 dispatch center, and the specifically established first-aid stations were surveyed daily for seven days. During this period, the event accounted for an average of 2.3% of daily activity in the emergency departments. None of the 13 monitored conditions were reported. This enhanced surveillance nevertheless helped foster new collaborations among local public health monitoring partners. (R.A.)
