Health Surveillance in the Grand Est Region. Epidemiological Update as of May 18, 2017.
Key Points
Enhanced Surveillance for Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika
In mainland France, Aedes albopictus, known as the "tiger mosquito," is established in 32 departments. In 2017, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin were classified as Level 1 departments under the mainland France plan to prevent the spread of chikungunya and dengue, due to the mosquito vector’s long-term presence.
The Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments are therefore included in the enhanced surveillance program for chikungunya, dengue, and Zika in mainland France, which runs from May 1 to November 30 each year.
Asthma Surveillance
After an increase between weeks 17 and 18, the proportion of asthma diagnoses in emergency department activity remained stable in early May (weeks 18 and 19).
After a slight decline in week 18, asthma-related activity at SOS Médecins clinics rose again in week 19. For this most recent week, the level of activity is consistent with that observed in previous years during the same period.
Allergy Monitoring
After a sharp decrease in week 18, allergy-related activity increased in outpatient care during week 19. However, the observed activity remains slightly below the levels seen in previous years during the same period.
According to the pollen and allergy bulletin, the allergy risk is moderate for grass pollen in the Vosges and Haut-Rhin departments. It is low for the other departments in the region.
Mortality Surveillance
As of May 16, 2017, the number of deaths observed over the past few weeks falls within the usual range of fluctuation.
