Health Surveillance in the Grand Est Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 23, 2017.
Key Points
Surveillance of Gastroenteritis
Hospital activity related to the management of gastroenteritis has fluctuated over the past several weeks but remains higher than the levels observed during the same period in 2016. The increase is primarily affecting children under 5 years of age.
According to data from the virology laboratories at the region’s university hospitals, rotavirus is currently the most prevalent enteric virus in circulation.
Activity at SOS Médecins clinics has been trending downward since week 45 of 2016 but remains higher than levels observed during the same period in previous years.
Activity related to acute diarrhea is low for the Grand Est region within the Sentinelles Network.
Bronchiolitis Surveillance
Activity related to bronchiolitis in emergency departments is decreasing compared to the previous week and is comparable to what was observed last year during the same period.
A downward trend in bronchiolitis activity is observed among SOS Médecins associations.
However, the Grand Est region remains in an epidemic phase.
RSV continues to circulate in the region.
Influenza Surveillance
In week 7, the decline in influenza activity in the region’s emergency departments continues.
Influenza-related activity is also decreasing among SOS Médecins associations.
The Grand-Est region is in the post-epidemic phase.
Virological data also show a decrease in viral circulation and confirm the predominance of influenza A virus.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Surveillance
During weeks 6 and 7, there were 8 incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning affecting 13 people.
Mortality surveillance
According to data available as of February 21, 2017, the episode of excess mortality observed in the Grand Est region since week 49 of 2016 continues for the tenth consecutive week. Following the slight increase in deaths observed in week 05, a downward trend is again observed in week 06 (February 6–12, 2017).
