Grand-Est Public Health Bulletin. April 2018.
Key Points
Vaccination coverage for vaccines that were mandatory prior to January 1, 2018 (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio) or that could only be administered as part of combination vaccines including mandatory vaccines (pertussis and Haemophilus influenzae type b) are high in the Grand Est region and meet the targets set by the Public Health Act (at least 95% vaccination coverage by 24 months). However, between 2015 and 2016, these rates decreased in all departments, and vaccination coverage below 95% was recorded in one department in 2016 for the Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine.
Vaccination coverage for the hepatitis B vaccine, recommended prior to January 1, 2018, and which can be administered concurrently with the mandatory vaccines, was 92% in 2016. It increased in all departments between 2014 and 2016 without reaching the 95% target. This increase can likely be explained by the use of hexavalent vaccines (containing components against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and hepatitis B).
In 2016, vaccination coverage against pneumococcus—a recommended vaccine requiring a separate injection but administered at the same time as mandatory vaccines—was 93% in the region. It increased between 2014 and 2016 but did not reach the 95% target.
In contrast, vaccination coverage for vaccines that were recommended but administered at different ages than the mandatory vaccines was significantly lower. Thus, in 2016 for the Grand Est region, vaccination coverage for the second dose of the "measles, mumps, rubella" vaccine was 81%. In 2017 for the region, vaccination coverage against meningococcal C was 30% for children aged 15–19, and just over one in four teenage girls had completed the full vaccination series for the human papillomavirus vaccine.
Variations in vaccination coverage rates are observed across departments, with the highest coverage rates often recorded in the departments of Ardennes, Meurthe-et-Moselle, and Marne, and the lowest in the departments of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin.
