Epidemiological Surveillance in the Lorraine Region. Update as of September 24, 2015.
Key Findings
Over the past three weeks, the number of allergy diagnoses recorded by emergency departments has stabilized at around 100 per week, representing less than 1% of all diagnoses. Regarding the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association, activity related to these conditions ranges from 17 to 12 diagnoses per week and accounts for between 2.3% and 1.5% of total activity.
In week 38, the weekly number of asthma diagnoses remained high for both data sources: 84 diagnoses were made by emergency departments and 15 by the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association. Nevertheless, this condition accounts for less than 1% of activity in Lorraine’s emergency departments and just under 2% of that of the SOS Médecins association. As in week 37, these asthma diagnoses primarily concern children under 15 years of age. When considering this age group, asthma accounts for 2% of emergency department activity and 3.8% of the SOS association’s activity. This trend is expected at this time of year. It is linked to the resurgence of respiratory viral infections as community life resumes after the summer school break, but other factors, such as exposure to allergens or the discontinuation of long-term asthma treatment during the holidays, may also play a role.
According to the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA), the allergy risk is very low for the four departments of Lorraine.
Based on available data, no unusual increase in mortality has been observed in Lorraine over the past few weeks. Since the time lag in reporting death data exceeds 7 days, data for week 38 are currently being consolidated.
