Epidemiological Surveillance in the Lorraine Region. Update as of June 11, 2015.
Key Findings
In Lorraine, emergency department activity related to allergies peaked in week 13 with nearly 180 diagnosed cases, representing nearly 1.5% of all diagnoses. This activity is higher than what is typically observed during this time of year compared to the previous two years. This trend is not observed for the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association, where activity is lower than in previous years (17 diagnoses representing less than 2.5%).
According to the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA), the allergy risk is very high in Lorraine for grass pollen.
The number of asthma diagnoses recorded by emergency departments and by the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association remains comparable to the number usually observed, but with an increase in hospitalizations for emergency departments. Over the past two weeks, approximately 80 to 95 weekly diagnoses were recorded in emergency departments (about 0.75% of total diagnoses) and between 15 and 17 by the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association (less than 2% of total diagnoses).
An increase in the number of diagnoses of heat-related illnesses was recorded by emergency departments in Lorraine and the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association in week 23. Despite this temporary increase, activity in emergency departments and among associations regarding these conditions is comparable to previous years.
Following the increase in gastroenteritis diagnoses observed between weeks 11 and 16, the number of these diagnoses has decreased and returned to seasonal norms. In week 23, fewer than 100 weekly diagnoses were made by emergency departments, representing less than 1% of total diagnoses, and fewer than 40 weekly diagnoses of gastroenteritis and diarrhea were made by SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle, representing 4% of total diagnoses.
According to data from the virology laboratory at Nancy University Hospital, few samples tested positive for enteric viruses in week 23. The few viruses detected were rotavirus, followed by adenovirus.
