Epidemiological surveillance in the Lorraine region. Update as of January 9, 2014.

Key Findings

  • In Lorraine, the number of emergency room visits for children under 1 year of age rose sharply in weeks 51 and 52, but this trend did not continue into week 1. It is likely that this increase was due to difficulties in accessing primary care during the Christmas holidays.

  • In Moselle, the number of hospitalizations rose sharply in week 1, leading to a strain on hospital capacity at the Bon Secours Regional Hospital in Metz.

  • The influenza epidemic threshold has not yet been crossed, neither in Lorraine nor in France. According to data from the virology laboratory at HIA Legouest, all samples for respiratory illnesses have tested negative for influenza since the beginning of fall.

  • Activity related to bronchiolitis remains high, although a decrease in the number of consultations appears to have been observed in Week 1.

  • Gastroenteritis activity is also significant, but remains lower than what was observed in previous seasons.
