Epidemiological surveillance in the Lorraine region. Update as of December 10, 2015.

Highlights

  • Since Week 40, influenza and influenza-like illness activity has been consistent with what is typically observed at this time of year in the emergency departments of the OSCOUR® network in Lorraine and among the SOS Médecins association in Meurthe-et-Moselle. Both nationally and across Europe, influenza activity remains low this week.

  • No severe cases of influenza were reported in Week 49 by intensive care units in Lorraine.

  • Since early September, seven clusters of acute respiratory infections have been reported in elderly care facilities in Lorraine.

  • In Lorraine, the increase in bronchiolitis activity observed over the past four weeks by emergency department physicians continues. In week 49, they made 118 diagnoses of bronchiolitis, 38 (32%) of which required hospitalization. This activity accounts for 14.8% of all diagnoses in children under 2 years of age and is slightly higher than what was observed during the same period last year. This increase in the number of bronchiolitis cases is being observed throughout mainland France. Doctors from the SOS Médecins association in Meurthe-et-Moselle made 6 diagnoses of bronchiolitis, which accounts for 5.3% of all diagnoses in this age group, a decrease compared to the past two weeks.

  • According to virological data from the Nancy University Hospital, the number of positive respiratory virus tests has been rising since week 45. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most commonly detected virus.

  • In Lorraine, activity related to gastroenteritis in the emergency departments of the OSCOUR® network and within the SOS Médecins association in Meurthe-et-Moselle remains stable compared to previous years, despite observed weekly variations. With 90 diagnoses made in week 49, this activity accounted for 0.8% of all diagnoses in emergency departments. Doctors from the SOS Médecins association in Meurthe-et-Moselle made 72 diagnoses of gastroenteritis and diarrhea, accounting for 7% of all diagnoses.

  • Since early September, five clusters of acute gastroenteritis cases in elderly care facilities have been reported in Lorraine.

  • The number of positive samples for circulating enteric viruses remains stable, according to data from the Nancy University Hospital.

  • During week 49, no cases of carbon monoxide poisoning (suspected or confirmed) were reported in Lorraine.
