Epidemiological Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Update as of November 18, 2015.
Highlights
Activity related to influenza and influenza-like illnesses remains low and stable compared to Week 45 in emergency departments. In Week 46, 5 cases of influenza and influenza-like illnesses were diagnosed, which still represents 0.1% of activity in these departments.According to the SOS Médecins associations, activity related to influenza and influenza-like illnesses has decreased very slightly compared to the previous two weeks (0.7% of total activity versus 0.8% and 0.9% in weeks 45 and 44). This very slight decline could be linked to the national strike day observed by SOS Médecins France on Friday, November 13. Data from the virology laboratory at the Strasbourg University Hospitals (HUS) indicate two cases infected with influenza A virus in week 41.
No severe cases of influenza have been reported since the start of surveillance (week 45) by intensive care units in Alsace.
In week 46, the number of bronchiolitis diagnoses among children under two years of age increased very slightly in emergency departments compared to the previous two weeks. However, activity remains below 5% of total activity. According to the SOS Médecins associations, activity has decreased slightly compared to the previous three weeks (less than 5% of total diagnoses in this age group).
The respiratory viruses most frequently detected by the HUS virology laboratory are rhinoviruses, enteroviruses, and parainfluenza viruses.
The moderate and steady increase in the number of weekly diagnoses of gastroenteritis and diarrhea continued in week 46 for emergency departments, representing nearly 2% of total activity. For the SOS Médecins associations, the increase in the number of diagnoses of these conditions showed a slight dip in week 46 (possible impact of the strike on 11/23). The share of activity for these conditions remains within the usual range (between 10 and 15%) for this time of year.
Regarding enteric viruses, in week 46, only one positive sample for Norovirus was identified by the HUS virology laboratory.
According to available data, no unusual increase in mortality has been observed in Alsace over the past few weeks. Since the time lag for reporting death data exceeds 7 days, data for week 46 are currently being consolidated.
From weeks 40 to 46, 8 incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning occurred in Alsace, affecting 34 people. Of these, 15 were treated in emergency departments and 3 were hospitalized. No deaths occurred.
