Epidemiological Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Update as of July 23, 2015.

Key Developments

  • In Week 29, one new case of measles was reported to the Alsace Regional Health Agency (ARS), bringing the total number of reported cases to 229. This case had been in contact with another measles case identified outside of a school setting. The low number and spacing of cases seem to indicate that we are nearing the end of the outbreak. This episode will be closed on August 7, 2015, if no other cases occur by then.

  • Last week (week 29), activity at the region’s SOS Médecins allergy clinics was comparable to what is typically observed at this time of year. It accounted for 2.9% of activity at the Strasbourg clinic (47 diagnoses) and 1.7% at the Mulhouse clinic (12 diagnoses).

  • Asthma-related activity at both SOS Médecins associations remains low and is decreasing. The number of diagnoses recorded accounted for less than 1% of activity at each of these associations.

  • According to the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA), the allergy risk from pollen is low in both departments of Alsace.

  • In week 29, the number of weekly diagnoses of heat-related conditions decreased compared to week 28 for both associations. Thus, 33 diagnoses of dehydration and heatstroke were recorded for the SOS Médecins association in Strasbourg (representing 2% of total diagnoses). For the Mulhouse association, 11 diagnoses were made, representing 1.6% of the total diagnoses.

  • A significant increase in the number of deaths was observed during week 27. Despite a slight decrease in mortality during week 28 (July 6–12), the observed figures remain higher than expected. Mortality data for week 28 are still being finalized due to delays in data transmission.
