Epidemiological surveillance in the Alsace region. Update as of July 16, 2015.

Key Points

  • Since the update on July 6, three new cases of measles have been reported to the Alsace Regional Health Agency (ARS). Although the outbreak appears to be subsiding, the virus continues to circulate, and vigilance and reminders of preventive measures must be maintained to prevent the emergence of further outbreaks. To date, no outbreaks linked to this epidemic have emerged in any other French region.

  • Last week (week 28), activity at the region’s SOS Médecins associations related to allergies was comparable to what is typically observed at this time of year. It accounted for 2.8% of activity at the Strasbourg association (44 diagnoses) and 1.8% at the Mulhouse association (13 diagnoses).

  • Asthma-related activity at both SOS Médecins associations remains low and is decreasing. The number of diagnoses recorded accounted for less than 1% of activity at each of these associations.

  • According to the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA), the allergy risk is moderate for grass pollen in both departments of Alsace.

  • In week 28, the number of weekly diagnoses of heat-related conditions decreased compared to week 27 for both associations. However, 57 diagnoses of dehydration and heatstroke were recorded for the SOS Médecins association in Strasbourg (representing 3.6% of total diagnoses). For the Mulhouse association, 29 diagnoses were made, representing 4.1% of the total diagnoses.

  • Nationally, an excess mortality of approximately 700 deaths was estimated for the week of June 29 to July 5, 2015. The Alsace region recorded a number of deaths in week 27 that was significantly higher than expected.
