Epidemiological Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Update as of February 19, 2015.

Key Findings

  • In Alsace, according to available data, there has been an increase in all-cause mortality among people aged 75 and older since Week 05, which was confirmed in Week 06. The proportion of these deaths attributable to winter illnesses is unknown.

  • For the two SOS Médecins d'Alsace associations, activity related to influenza and influenza-like illnesses remains very high, accounting for 20 to 25% of each association’s caseload. In week 07 (February 9–15, 2015), the epidemic continues nationwide.

  • Since September 1, 2014, 152 respiratory specimens have tested positive for the influenza virus, including 75 in weeks 05 and 06.

  • There has been a continued occurrence of severe influenza cases requiring hospitalization in intensive care, with a total of 30 cases since November 2014, 3 of whom have died.

  • In week 06 (February 2–8, 2015), 154 respiratory samples were collected, and among the positive results, 48 were for influenza (31%).

  • For the two SOS Médecins associations in Alsace, the number of bronchiolitis diagnoses remains low. The proportion of bronchiolitis diagnoses represents less than 5% of these associations’ total activity in week 07.

  • In week 7, the weekly number of diagnoses of gastroenteritis and diarrhea made by the Alsatian SOS Médecins associations remains low. The proportion of gastroenteritis and diarrhea diagnoses accounts for 8 to 10% of the total activity of these associations in week 7.
