Epidemiological Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Update as of April 16, 2015.

Key Points

  • An outbreak of measles in the Haut-Rhin department is currently under investigation.

  • This year’s flu epidemic, which began in week 52 in Alsace, is nearing its end. Flu activity among the region’s SOS Médecins associations is low. In week 15, the weekly number of diagnoses of influenza and influenza-like illnesses (37 for SOS Médecins Strasbourg and 18 for SOS Médecins Mulhouse) accounted for less than 3% of the total diagnoses for each association. In week 14, of the 75 samples tested for respiratory viruses, only 5 tested positive (influenza B). Nationally, the weekly number of cases has been below the epidemic threshold since week 13 (March 23–29).

  • In week 14, the majority of circulating respiratory viruses were enteroviruses or rhinoviruses.

  • The weekly number of diagnoses of acute gastroenteritis and diarrhea is stable and accounts for 10 to 12% of the total number of diagnoses made by each of the associations in week 15.

  • The weekly number of allergy diagnoses made by the SOS Médecins Strasbourg association exceeded 50 in week 15 and accounts for 3% of the association’s total activity. Allergy activity at the SOS Médecins Mulhouse association remains stable and accounts for less than 2% of its activity.

  • Asthma-related activity is on the rise: 16 weekly diagnoses made by each of the associations in week 15. This activity accounts for a maximum of 2% of the total number of diagnoses made.

  • According to the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA), the allergy risk is moderate in both Alsatian departments.

  • During the 2014–2015 heating season, 40 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning were reported in Alsace, which is comparable to the data observed during the same period the previous year.
