Public Health Surveillance in the Centre Region. Report on CO Poisoning Cases in 2013.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental death from poisoning in France. The objective of the surveillance system, coordinated by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance, is to collect data on the circumstances surrounding CO poisonings and their severity in order to adapt regulations and prevention measures to the most common or most serious situations that could be addressed by a strategy to combat CO poisoning. In the medium term, it also allows for an assessment of the impact of public health policy in this area. This surveillance system collects information from the medical investigation conducted by the Poison Control and Toxicovigilance Center (CAPTV) in Angers in the Centre region, as well as from the environmental investigation conducted either by the regional delegations of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) or by the Community Health Services (SCHS) in certain municipalities. In the Centre region, CO poisoning cases follow national trends, ranging from 50 to 60 cases per year, mostly occurring in the home. Approximately 150 people are poisoned annually, one in four of whom are seriously affected. Seasonal and annual variations are linked to weather conditions.
