Public Health Surveillance in the Centre Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 1, 2013.

Key Points

  • Influenza: S04-2013 Significant increase in influenza-related visits and hospitalizations, but a decrease in the number of severe cases admitted to intensive care units across most of France, including the Centre region. The epidemiological situation is likely linked to the increased proportion of influenza B viruses in circulation.

  • Acute gastroenteritis (AGE): S04-2013 According to unconsolidated data from the Sentinelles Network, the national incidence of acute diarrhea leading to a visit to a general practitioner was 279 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, just above the epidemic threshold of 276 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The regions with the highest incidence rates are: Champagne-Ardennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, and Limousin. The new GII4 norovirus variant (Sydney 2012) is responsible for the majority of clustered AGE cases reported to the National Reference Center for Enteric Viruses.
