Leading Causes of Death in the Centre-Val de Loire Region. 2023 Report.
Key Points
In 2023, 28,092 deaths were recorded among residents of the Centre-Val de Loire region, representing a standardized rate of 830.0 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 2022 (871.2), as was the case nationally. However, the regional mortality rate remains higher than the national rate recorded in 2023 (798.4).
Male mortality remains higher than female mortality, with a standardized rate of 1,078.4 deaths per 100,000 men compared to 641.4 per 100,000 women.
Tumors (240.0) and diseases of the circulatory system (172.2) are the two leading causes of death, showing a slight decrease compared to 2022. Preventing risk factors (tobacco, alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, etc.) is a priority to reduce their impact on health.
External causes of morbidity and mortality (accidents of daily life, suicides, accidental falls) represent the third leading cause of death in the region (62.8) (excluding ill-defined symptoms and conditions). Among those under 65, they remain the second leading cause of mortality, after tumors.
Mental and behavioral disorders, the sixth leading cause of death, have standardized mortality rates higher than the national average in five departments (excluding Eure-et-Loir), highlighting a major public health issue requiring targeted actions.
Disparities in mortality rates are observed across departments: they are significantly higher than the national average in Cher (969.4), Indre (915.2), and Eure-et-Loir (859.1), while Indre-et-Loire (728.8) has a rate below the national average.
In particular, Cher and Indre have rates higher than the national average for several causes, notably tumors, circulatory diseases, mental disorders, and metabolic diseases. In Eure-et-Loir, mortality rates for respiratory diseases, mental disorders, and diseases of the nervous system are significantly higher than the national average.
