COVID-19 in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Public Health Bulletin: 2020–2023 Overview.

Key Points

  • Several waves of the epidemic were observed in the Centre-Val de Loire region, as was the case nationwide. The largest wave of the epidemic was observed in early 2022 in the Centre-Val de Loire region. People under the age of 20 were particularly affected.

  • Genomic surveillance is provided by the EMERGEN consortium. In the Centre-Val de Loire region, the timeline of variant circulation between March 2020 and February 2023 remained consistent with that observed in mainland France.

  • SOS Médecins activity for COVID-19 was higher in 2020 and late 2021 (the start of the Omicron wave), particularly among those aged 15–64. Emergency department activity for COVID-19 was higher in early 2020, particularly among those aged 64 and older. Regarding the monitoring of hospitalizations, the proportion of Covid-19 patients admitted to intensive care among all Covid-19 hospitalizations was higher between 2020 and late 2021 compared to late 2021–2023.

  • Monitoring of severe cases in intensive care indicates a higher male-to-female ratio among severe Covid-19 cases reported during the period, particularly in the second half of 2021. The age of cases remained consistent over the study period, as did the time between the onset of symptoms and admission to intensive care.
