In 2021, 15.5% of adults aged 18–75 reported having heavy drinking episodes at least once a month; this proportion has not changed significantly since 2017.
This proportion is not significantly different from the national level (16.5%).
Exceeding low-risk drinking guidelines
In 2021, 19% of adults aged 18 to 75 reported exceeding the guidelines for lower-risk drinking.
This proportion is not significantly different from the national level (22%). This proportion was significantly higher among men and in the highest income brackets.
Emergency room visits directly related to alcohol
In 2023, 5,374 emergency room visits directly related to alcohol were recorded, compared to 4,587 in 2017.
The proportion of emergency room visits directly related to alcohol, however, was decreasing, particularly in light of the increase in emergency room visits for all causes since 2021.
The atypical year of 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, saw a lower number of visits.
The departments with the highest rates of emergency room visits directly related to alcohol were Cher, Indre, and Loir-et-Cher.
