Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of June 28, 2017.

Heat-related health issuesWeek 25 was marked by a heat wave affecting all of France. The department of Ille-et-Vilaine was placed under a yellow heat wave alert starting June 17, then under an orange heat wave alert from June 19 to June 22 (for the first time in Brittany since the implementation of the national heat wave plan). The other departments in the region were under a yellow heat wave alert during the same period.For each source, heat-related activity increases were observed during week 25, reaching levels higher than those during the heat waves of 2016. Heat-related conditions accounted for 1.6% and 1% of SOS Médecins consultations and emergency room visits with a coded diagnosis during week 25. This activity affected those aged 75 and older in 37% and 53% of cases, respectively. More than half of emergency room visits (52%) resulted in hospitalization, and among those aged 75 and older, the hospitalization rate reached 72%.
Enterovirus Meningitis: The number of emergency department visits for enterovirus meningitis exceeded seasonal averages. High viral circulation of enteroviruses identified in cerebrospinal fluid samples analyzed at the Virology Laboratory of the Brest University Hospital. In addition, there is high activity in emergency departments and SOS Médecins for insect bites and an increase in activity related to general malaise and isolated fevers. Levels are higher than those in 2015 and 2016 for the same period. (Data not shown).
