News

IFREMER has detected levels of lipophilic toxins (DSP) and amnesic toxins exceeding regulatory thresholds in several areas of Finistère. Furthermore, the Alexandrium alert threshold has been exceeded in the Daoulas River, and the presence of the paralytic toxin PSP has been detected in mussel samples from this area. Consequently, the Prefect has banned recreational and commercial mussel fishing in the area from the eastern part of Brest Harbor to the Daoulas River. Symptoms of poisoning in consumers appear between 5 and 30 minutes after ingesting contaminated shellfish. These include oral paresthesia, numbness of the lips spreading to the face, arms, and legs, headaches, nausea, and dizziness. In the most severe cases, motor incoordination and slurred speech are observed, with a risk of death due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles.Any poisoning related to the consumption of shellfish, like any outbreak of foodborne illness, must be reported to the Operational Center for Receiving and Coordinating Reports (CORRSi) of the ARS Bretagne at 09 74 50 00 09 (24 hours a day, including weekends).
