Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of February 7, 2017.
Key Points
Influenza and influenza-like illness: Epidemic activity (declining). Decrease in emergency department visits (-37%), except among people aged 75 and older, among whom visits are increasing. Decrease in the number of SOS Médecins consultations (-32%) (all ages combined). High activity in primary care: incidence rate of influenza-like illnesses estimated at 214 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [117, 311], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).Renewed increase in the circulation of type A virus at the Brest University Hospital (positivity rate = 24% out of 139 samples) and stabilization at the Rennes University Hospital (positivity rate = 29% out of 214 samples).
Severe cases of influenzaSince week 44/2016, 55 severe cases of influenza have been admitted to intensive care in Brittany. Fifty-four were infected with a type A virus and one with a type B virus. The average age was 66 years. Fifty patients had at least one risk factor targeted by vaccination.
Acute Respiratory Infections in Nursing HomesSince September 1, 2016, 121 outbreaks of acute respiratory infections in nursing homes have been reported.
Gastroenteritis: Epidemic activity. Increase in visits to community emergency rooms (+21%). Stable visits to hospital emergency rooms, with a decrease observed among children under 5 years of age (-16%). Activity remains slightly above seasonal averages in both sources.High activity in primary care: incidence rate of acute diarrhea estimated at 291 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [159, 423], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).Circulation of Rotavirus, Norovirus, and Adenovirus, detected in enteric specimens analyzed at the virology laboratories of the Brest University Hospital and the Rennes University Hospital.
Mortality: An excess of deaths across all age groups and among those aged 75 and older has been observed since week 52 of 2016. In week 03 of 2017, an excess of at least +13% was noted in Brittany (subject to data consolidation; data are not yet complete).
Bronchiolitis (children under 2 years of age)Epidemic activity (peak in week 51). Decrease in emergency department visits (-8%) following the resurgence observed in week 04/2016. Viral circulation on the rise according to data from the virology laboratories at the Brest University Hospital and the Rennes University Hospital (positivity rate = 14% out of 138 samples and 16% out of 35 samples, respectively).
