Panjo Home Visits: Support Tailored to the Needs of Families and Newborns
Côtes-d'Armor, Finistère, Île-et-Vilaine, Morbihan: the four departments of the Brittany region are piloting the “Promotion of Health and Attachment for Newborns and Their Young Parents: A Tool to Strengthen Maternal and Child Health Services (Panjo)” initiative, which offers home visits to new parents in vulnerable situations. The goal is to support them in developing interactions with their baby to foster a strong bond. Midwives and pediatric nurses accompany the family during pregnancy and until the baby is 6 months old, in their home, where they feel most comfortable. They focus primarily on the parents’ skills and needs to help them expand their psychosocial and parenting capacities. By establishing a relationship of trust, the professionals create a space for parents to express the upheavals brought about by the arrival of a child. However, it can be difficult to find time for this preventive work, the effects of which the professionals will not see immediately, while the immediate needs for child protection are pressing.
