Headlines - Update on the COVID-19 outbreak in France

In mainland France, the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic is exponential. The rapidly increasing transmission rate is very concerning. The rise in cases is particularly significant among symptomatic individuals (+74% compared to Week 33), who, in Week 34, accounted for more than half of confirmed cases. While all age groups are affected by the increase, the rise in incidence remains more pronounced among young adults.

In week 34, 78 departments exceeded the incidence rate threshold of 10 per 100,000 inhabitants, and nine departments exceeded the alert threshold (50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). Although still at limited levels, hospital indicators (new hospitalizations and ICU admissions) are on the rise, particularly in regions where viral circulation is most intense. As of September 1, 2020, 57 departments are in a vulnerable situation, including Côte-d’Or (high vulnerability) and Yonne (moderate vulnerability).

These results indicate that it is essential to continue efforts to raise awareness among the entire population regarding the implementation of preventive measures, particularly mask-wearing and physical distancing, to curb the spread of the virus.

To slow the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the population, it is equally important to strengthen the implementation of the “Test-Trace-Isolate” strategy: anyone exhibiting symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 or having even the slightest doubt must get tested for the virus as soon as possible. While awaiting results, these individuals must self-isolate and limit their contact to the absolute minimum.

This approach must be combined with adherence
to all preventive measures, participation in contact tracing efforts, and compliance with isolation measures for infected individuals, those likely to be infected, or contacts classified as high-risk.
