Mushroom Poisoning Cases as of September 6, 2015The InVS has been conducting annual surveillance of mushroom poisoning cases since 2010, based on cases recorded by the Poison Control and Toxicovigilance Centers (CAPTV) and the Oscour® network (a coordinated surveillance network for emergency room visits, currently covering approximately 90% of hospital emergency departments). This health surveillance is seasonal and runs from July to December each year (the period during which 90% of mushroom poisoning cases are recorded). Between June 29 and September 6, 2015, 313 cases of mushroom poisoning were recorded in France by the CAPTVs. Since August 3, this number has been steadily increasing, with a cumulative total of 226 cases for the last three weeks (weeks 34 and 36, from August 17 to September 6), representing 72% of all cases. To date, no deaths or severe cases have been reported by the CAPTV network. Approximately three deaths and more than twenty severe cases are observed by the CAPTVs each year. In terms of regional distribution, these cases were observed mainly in Aquitaine (52 cases, 16.6%), Midi-Pyrénées (46 cases, 14.7%), and Rhône-Alpes (37 cases, 11.8%). Franche-Comté and Burgundy accounted for 14 cases (4.5%) and 8 cases (2.6%), respectively. During the same period, the Oscour® network recorded 198 emergency room visits for mushroom poisoning. In August, 10 visits were recorded by the emergency department network in Burgundy (8 in Côte-d'Or and 2 in Yonne) and 6 in Franche-Comté (4 in Doubs and 2 in Jura). This resurgence in mushroom poisoning cases should be viewed in conjunction with the return of rainfall, which promotes mushroom growth and, consequently, mushroom picking.
