Summary of Heat Waves in Metropolitan France During the Summer of 2015On October 9, 2015, a summary of heat wave monitoring for the summer of 2015 was published on the website of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS).Three heat waves (lasting 10, 11, and 5 days) occurred in mainland France between June and August 2015, affecting several regions, including Burgundy and Franche-Comté, which were impacted by all three waves (see map).Nationally, for these three episodes, emergency room visits and SOS Médecins consultations, all causes combined, remained comparable to those typically observed during this period. However, a significant increase in heat-related conditions was observed among emergency room visits and SOS Médecins consultations. This increase was more pronounced during the first two episodes. The number of deaths, all causes combined, extrapolated to the national level, is nearly 3,300 higher than the expected number over the entire period of the three heat waves, representing a 6.5% increase in mortality. This percentage remains lower than those recorded in 2003 and 2006. In Burgundy and Franche-Comté, healthcare utilization for heat-related illnesses accounted for 1.9% of total emergency room visits during the first heatwave in Burgundy and 0.8% in Franche-Comté. For SOS Médecins consultations, heat-related conditions accounted for 4.1% of consultations in Burgundy and 3.1% in Franche-Comté during the first heat wave. The figures were lower for the other two heat waves. Over the period of the three heat waves, the extrapolated excess mortality was +141 deaths in Burgundy (+9%) and +108 deaths in Franche-Comté (+11%).
