Focus on Measles: In Germany, a measles outbreak is currently underway in Berlin. Since the beginning of 2015 and as of February 25, nearly 600 cases have already been reported, along with one death in an 18-month-old child. In just two months, the number of reported cases has exceeded the total number of cases reported in 2014 (N=444). The outbreak, which began in October 2014, initially affected people from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. This outbreak has now spread to the German population. The figure below shows the annual distribution of measles cases in Germany. In France, the situation remains calm, with fewer than 10 cases reported per month in 2015 and no localized outbreaks to date (including in Brittany, where nearly half of the cases were reported in 2014). The national epidemiological situation is available on the InVS website (data as of 01/22/2015). The situation in the Burgundy and Franche-Comté regions is presented weekly in Tables 1 and 2 of the Epidemiological Bulletin. No cases have been reported since the beginning of 2015. For information, the last reported case in Burgundy showed initial symptoms in September 2014, and in Franche-Comté in March 2014. It is important to remember that to prevent new outbreaks, France must maintain a high level of measles vaccination coverage, specifically 95% of children under 2 years of age for the first dose and at least 80% for the second dose, as well as a catch-up vaccination program with two doses of a trivalent vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella for anyone born since 1980.
