2015 NOYADES Survey: Currently 3 Deaths Recorded Per DayThe 2015 NOYADES survey, organized by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) and the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (Inpes), has recorded, since June 1, 2015, 275 accidental drownings, 109 of which resulted in death.Over a five-week period, from June 1 to July 5, the 109 deaths—an average of 3 per day—occurred in all types of water bodies: 34% at sea, 24% in rivers, 21% in swimming pools, 17% in lakes and ponds, and 4% in other locations (bathtubs, pools, etc.). All age groups are affected, particularly young people, with 23 deaths among those under 20, and people aged 65 and older, with 46 deaths. Compared to the last NOYADES survey conducted in 2012, over the same period, the number of deaths increased by 50% (from 73 to 109). Among those under 20, the number rose from 12 to 23 deaths, and among those over 65, from 20 to 46. These drownings are linked to the fine weather and high temperatures of recent weeks, which encourage swimming.Prevention remains the best protection, which is why INPES has published a brochure on the various precautions to take: "Swimming Safely." Swimming carries risks at all ages; adopt the right preventive habits: For children: swim with them, and designate an adult to supervise them. For adults: be mindful of your physical condition, swim in supervised areas and enter the water gradually, avoid heavy meals and drinking alcohol before and during swimming. The risk of feeling unwell is even greater if the water is cold or after prolonged exposure to the sun.
