The Inserm Sentinelles Network: Call for General Practitioners and Pediatricians.Created in 1984 and coordinated by a joint research unit (UMR S 1136) of Inserm and Pierre and Marie Curie University, the Sentinelles network brings together more than 1,300 private general practitioners—300 of whom are actively involved in weekly surveillance—and about 100 private pediatricians in mainland France. In partnership with the InVS, the network collects, analyzes, and disseminates epidemiological data derived from the practice of physicians and pediatricians for public health surveillance purposes (actions aimed at identifying the occurrence of an unusual or abnormal event that may pose a risk to public health). Continuous surveillance involves weekly reporting of cases seen in general practice, based on eight health indicators: influenza-like illnesses, chickenpox, acute diarrhea, shingles, male urethritis, Lyme disease, mumps, and suicide attempts. "Sentinel" physicians can participate in this continuous surveillance, in sampling campaigns for the virological surveillance of influenza-like illness cases, in ad hoc investigations, and in training sessions, depending on their areas of interest. These primary care providers, trained in health surveillance, can also participate in local InVS studies (such as the surveillance of tick-borne diseases, which involved 254 doctors from Franche-Comté during the 2011–2012 period) or in the regional public health network (a group of partners working to anticipate, detect, and control public health events, as well as to inform healthcare professionals and facilitate patient care). To date, about ten general practitioners in Burgundy and Franche-Comté regularly participate in the network’s activities. However, this number of “sentinel” doctors is too small to assess subregional trends in the monitored conditions. You can contribute to the regional effort as a doctor in the Sentinelles network. Participating in the monitoring of the 8 health indicators takes about 10 minutes per week. Case reports can be submitted at your own pace, depending on your availability. You will receive weekly updates on the epidemiological situation, as well as up-to-date medical and scientific information (literature reviews, thematic reports, forum).
