Headlines - Impact of the Recent Heat Wave in Burgundy-Franche-Comté

Retrospective epidemiological studies conducted in France following the 2003 heat wave showed that a heat wave lasting at least three consecutive days and nights was responsible for excess mortality1. To anticipate these phenomena, Météo-France calculates Bio-Meteorological Indicators (BMIs, averages of minimum and maximum temperatures over three consecutive days) during the summer based on temperature forecasts. If the IBMs exceed predefined thresholds, Level 2 of the "Warning and Action" alert, known as Miga, under the National Heat Wave Plan is activated. As early as Tuesday, August 14, 2012, Météo-France predicted that IBM thresholds would be exceeded across a large number of contiguous regions. These forecasts prompted prefects to activate Miga on Saturday, August 18, in Burgundy and starting Sunday, August 19, in Franche-Comté (except in the Doubs department). [...]
