Surveillance of HIV Infection and AIDS, 2013The Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin of March 24 presents surveillance data on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and AIDS in France in 2013, as well as trends since 2003.In 2013, between 5,800 and 6,700 people learned they were HIV-positive, including 43% men who have sex with men (MSM), 37% heterosexuals born abroad, 18% heterosexuals born in France, and 1% people who use drugs. Among these HIV diagnoses, 39% were early-stage (≥ 500 CD4/mm³ or primary infection) and 25% were late-stage (< 200 CD4/mm³ or AIDS stage). The number of early diagnoses has increased since 2011, and the number of late diagnoses has decreased since 2010, except among MSM, where it has remained stable. The regional disparities observed since 2003 persisted in 2013: the number of HIV diagnoses per capita was higher than the national average (95 per million inhabitants) in the French departments of French Guiana and Île-de-France, and lower than the average in Burgundy and Franche-Comté. The number of new AIDS cases diagnosed has been gradually decreasing by about 100 cases per year since 1997: in 2013, between 1,100 and 1,300 cases were diagnosed, 85% of which were in people who had not previously received antiretroviral treatment. Screening efforts have yielded tangible results since 2012, with more early diagnoses. Despite these encouraging figures, late diagnoses still affect one in six MSM and one in three heterosexuals, underscoring the need to continue these efforts. Furthermore, the rising number of diagnoses among MSM under 25 suggests that prevention campaigns should target this population.
