Pneumococcal and Tetanus Vaccination Coverage Among Residents of Nursing Homes in Burgundy and Franche-Comté, France, 2009
Objective - To assess pneumococcal and tetanus vaccination coverage among individuals aged 65 and older who meet vaccination recommendations and reside in long-term care facilities for the elderly (Ehpa) in Burgundy and Franche-Comté. Method - A cross-sectional study using a representative sample (n=500) selected through a two-stage sampling procedure was conducted from January to April 2009. Fifty nursing homes were randomly selected in the first stage (stratified cluster sampling by facility type and region). In the second stage, 10 residents aged 65 or older were randomly selected in each Ehpa (simple random sampling). Vaccination data were collected from medical records. Results - The average age of residents was 86 years, and three-quarters of them were women. More than one-third of the residents were eligible for pneumococcal vaccination. Pneumococcal vaccination coverage among these at-risk residents was 27%, 95% CI [21–34]. Tetanus vaccination coverage among the residents was 44%, 95% CI [40–49]. Conclusion - This study highlights the low pneumococcal and tetanus vaccination coverage among residents of long-term care facilities in Burgundy and Franche-Comté. Initiatives to promote these vaccinations are necessary to prevent the risk of infection from these two diseases among elderly people living in institutions. (R.A.)
