Outbreak of foodborne illness caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Longevelle-sur-le-Doubs, July 2003

This article presents the epidemiological investigation conducted within two days of a mass food poisoning incident that occurred following a meal organized by a local soccer club. A retrospective cohort of meal participants was established. A standardized foodborne illness questionnaire was administered to them. Laboratory tests were conducted to identify links between the consumption of various foods and the onset of clinical symptoms. Water and food samples were collected. The presence of staphylococcal enterotoxins in a salad was confirmed by the veterinary testing laboratory. This investigation highlights the need for health education emphasizing the precautions to be taken when preparing group meals in a volunteer setting.
